Now in Paris ...

- Max Ernst Collages: "A Week of Goodness" - exhibition
From Tuesday June 30 2009 to Sunday September 13 2009
Paper and glue…
By 1850 the concept of a "sensational picture" had become widespread invading books and magazines and print media in general.
Born in 1891 Max Ernst as a child was swept up in this revolution. This baggage would prove useful when in 1933 he decided to counter-act the surrealism movement with his work. His idea was to subvert popular illustrations and symbols to create something entirely new.
Inspired as much by the Marquis de Sade as by French superheroes comics and detective novel covers his amazing "picture book" organised as a calendar is like a window into the 20th century… A century where art fed off previous generations to move forwards...
