A Wagnerian monument.

A simple chord: E flat major, an austere and ageless sound at first barely perceptible, then grows, swells into a series of waves… A swell "caught up in celestial panoramas, a solemn and mystical movement blending the rich music of these all-powerful chords" (Baudelaire). This is a description of the Rhine, but also one of the world itself, characterised by its perpetual motion, its cyclical timelessness.

Wagner holds this chord during the first 137 bars of the piece, his manner of recreating the world for us, laying the foundation of a world at once eternal and ever-changing. It seems that all music in this piece stems from this very chord. As Wagner said himself, writing to his friend Liszt, "Composing in such a manner has never been done before."
