Anthropological art

This anthropological exhibition presents over 150 works of art from five continents, in order to highlight the decline of four types of image-making connected with four kinds of ontology: animism, naturalism, totemism and analogism.

The works are arranged two by two in order to highlight the contrasts between them: animism, which attributes souls to objects, is placed in stark contrast to naturalism, in which culture is held to be a privilege of man alone and everything else has but a material value. Totemism reflects the belief that humans and non humans can have a deep social and psychological connection, while analogism is the belief that everything is different and individual, provoking the human desire to find connections between the individual and the world around us.

From inuit scuptures to Dutch 17th century paintings; from ritual Australian aboriginal objects to the aesthetics of Chinese landscapes; this stunning journey through the land of images, taking in works of art which are so fundamentally different in form and in ideology, is bound to stir strong aesthetic feelings and offer viewers the chance to view works of art in a completely different way.
